This is titled as a question because it's hard to say what any individual's experience would be, but in the case of Byron Brooks, it seems that no matter the "falseness of the confidence", he always manages to succeed.

[00:00:00] Oh
[00:00:01] Hello diary listeners
[00:00:04] Man, it was such a great holiday that I lost all track of time and space
[00:00:09] I thought today was Tuesday, but it's not it's Wednesday and
[00:00:15] Rico Rico had to remind me of what day it was. It was pretty shameful
[00:00:19] But yeah, it was it was a great holiday. I hope all of you had a great holiday. I
[00:01:27] in these thought spaces of mine, I said, well, we're all deluded. That's the truth. We all are. It's just that I'm hip to the knowledge that I get to choose my own delusion. And
[00:01:34] what I consider crazier is choosing a delusion that makes you upset every day.
[00:01:38] Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
[00:01:39] Why? Why are you doing that?
[00:01:43] Absolutely.
[00:01:44] That's nuts. There's part of me that really wishes that I could take myself less seriously. And that's why I love comedy. I mean, my boyfriend, he's incredibly funny. I think that that's part of the reason why we're together is because no matter what, no matter how much he pisses me off, he manages to make me laugh again.
[00:03:04] I'm just like, thank God you have that because actually have a lot of time on my hands. I'm, I'm also very, very OCD about scheduling. So I can get a lot done, because I make a schedule for myself. And I'm pretty consistently keep to that schedule. So I'm able to, you
[00:04:22] know, work a part time job, to do this. Well, that's cool, though. That's really cool. Oh, and you got to I mean, again, I'm I'm sure your ADD appreciates on certain levels that that kind of just arresting at any moment like it can be it can be draining.
[00:05:43] But yeah, dude, I is like a low B. Yeah, absolutely. Yep. And I'm not that I'm a straight a like if I, if I can get the A, I'm going to go for the A, you know? Yeah. And I, that might be a fault for me because I actually stress myself
[00:07:00] out like, because I strive for perfection. You know what I mean? Yeah. Like even, uh, I deal constantly with very hungry people because the attraction of this podcast is it says apprenticeship. So it pulls in a lot of news. And I'm so glad because that's the caliber of people I wanted to reach because they're the most hungry and the most passionate and that's that beautiful time in like the zoom thing where I was saying with the guy with the with the underwear. Like sometimes I'll look out into the crowd and they're laughed, they're laughing but their body posture isn't saying that they're
[00:09:43] having a good time. And that I might get giving very much away when I talk about the four agreements,
[00:11:00] they, you can look them up and get the general gist of them,
[00:11:03] but the book goes into further depth. really determining what is yours to command is for fun. Again, I think that I would do great with crowd work because I used to be a hairstylist and- Nice, so you got all the scoop. Dude, watching people in a mirror and paying attention to how they were and having to perform for them, literally perform like on the, you know,
[00:12:21] every half hour a new person and like, you know,
[00:12:25] giving somebody a sense of gratification And you have to be lovely. Yes. You want them to come back. Yep. I hear that. Yeah, dude. So the retention is like, that's the key to it rather than that one time feat of awesome. The crowd work is everything. You know, the people work is everything.
[00:13:42] So that's really interesting. things. Um, do I, would you agree? Yeah, I would definitely agree. Yeah. Um, and I think that people are a lot easier, like they, once they know that you're willing to make fun of yourself and they kind of, their butt holes relax, you know, like they're like, Oh, this is cool. Like I can, yeah, I can be, I can be kind of chill around.
[00:15:01] This is not a bad person. They at least have some self analysis.
[00:15:06] They're aware.
[00:16:02] I make that experience self-deprecating for me.
[00:16:02] Yeah. So then I'll throw something back out there that makes me look dumb, but I get
[00:16:07] the mental, that's a good question.
[00:16:10] I love that.
[00:16:11] I love that.
[00:16:11] Sometimes, you know, sometimes I'll try and do some crowd work in the crowd,
[00:16:14] just not having it and I just have to go back to material.
[00:16:17] Um, yeah.
[00:16:18] Yeah.
[00:16:18] What, how do you, how do you formulate material?
[00:16:21] Cause I mean, you're, what's the longest sets that you do?
[00:17:22] That's good. That's really good. Yeah.
[00:17:23] Generally you develop it by going to open mics.
[00:17:27] And.
[00:17:29] Yeah, it's just it's trial and error, you know, you go in, try this joke doesn't work, go to a different over might try the joke a little different you might get a chuckle. Okay.
[00:17:39] We're getting somewhere.
[00:17:41] And you know a single joke may take a Maybe. Yeah, I would say yeah. Yeah, you're three years. Yeah, it's about right. I mean, you know, for some people, you know, maybe a little longer, some people a
[00:19:02] little faster. Yeah. But on yeah, I try and be as clear headed as possible. And for some comedians, that's not like my friend, Justo, he can't like, he has to have a joint before,
[00:20:20] and meet five minutes before he goes on stage,
[00:20:23] he has to have, you know, but it's one of those things where if I know that the crowd is all on the same drug, great. Cause then we're all laughing together. We're laughing together. But if I'm smoking pot and you're here, you're drinking, that's going to be a disconnect. And it's the same thing with
[00:21:40] me and a lot of, um, a lot of, uh, I mean? Yeah, totally. Well, that's been the disconnect for me for most punk shows and stuff. Alcohol is like the major thing and I don't, I can't, I can't, I never know how much. When I was younger, yeah, but now it's, it just takes too much out of me. I was a little fucking nerd right away. Like I knew what I wanted to be like very early on.
[00:23:04] Honestly, it was the saving grace for me and so many people. It's actually hard to come up with like a list. Yeah. But the other day, I really sat down and thought about working comedians. My top three working are Joe koi. I love Joe koi. Nate Bar Gazzi. I don't think I know him very well.
[00:24:20] Oh, he's hilarious. Really? Okay. I'm glad we're getting our God see. And um,
[00:25:27] Yeah. Oh man diary listeners, it's getting real.
[00:25:32] The new year is coming up and I usually don't have a resolution, but I do this year and I wanted to give you guys two of my regular
[00:25:38] commercials that I typically shout out intermittently throughout the year.
[00:25:43] They're great, great people individually and the services they offer.
[00:26:45] him, reach out to him. You can find him at edenhealthmd.com.
[00:26:57] Hey, are you somebody who likes to draw? Are you somebody who wants to draw better? Are you someone who tattoos? Are you
[00:27:03] somebody who wants to tattoo better? Well, then I recommend
[00:28:02] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:04] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:06] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:08] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:10] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:12] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:14] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:16] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:18] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:20] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:22] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:24] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
[00:28:26] I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm is. I think that, you know, it's everything, right? Like, I mean, you're a graphic designer, so you know the subtleties of a package and, you know, down to the font, down to, you know, color, coordination and stuff like that. I have a friend who's
[00:29:44] an artist and he loves doing car shows and stuff. And one of his major things that he So when I get home and I'm like, I'm invisible, this isn't going to work. Well, no joke. I mean, it's a factor in my profession too. I just met up at a tattoo convention and there was a guy teaching us about how to take photographs on different skin tones.
[00:31:01] And he's like, you know, if you have a don't know, I'm not in the comedy world. But if there was some nuggets of advice to give people who wanted to get into this, what would you give them? Just try it. I could tell you,
[00:32:24] there's a lot of advice I can give to people who are bombing, you're not nervous. I would think it would be a gift to bomb. The gift is to bomb. That's what you learn. Yeah. People think bombing is a bad thing, but that's where you learn. That's how you figure out what jokes are going to work and what reactions are going to work and, you know, things like that.
[00:33:44] Well, even just to compare it to tattooing, my apprentice, And my boss at this point had to like come in and he's very, he was very goofy and then he like did this deep squat and he's like, you got to learn to breathe through your butth discouraging out of the gate. Like out of the gate, it's going to be discouraged. It's going to be discouraging for a little while. But then you're going to get to a place where it's like, I'm having the best time of my life. I'm meeting a bunch of new people. I'm meeting people I thought I'd never meet before. Um, you know, I'm making large
[00:36:23] crowds laugh. It's really good feeling. So you know, getting
[00:37:28] Do you, I mean, was there things that really helped you get out of that headspace? I mean, you do BJJ and things like that. So I'm sure those are, you know, things that don't you,
[00:37:34] to be honest, that's the number one thing I had, I started doing, let's see,
[00:38:42] opportunities are going to present themselves. You just got to be patient.
[00:38:44] Yeah.
[00:38:44] And like I said, I still get discouraged because, you know,
[00:38:49] there's guys who, you know, I've been doing this for six years.
[00:38:52] There's guys who've been doing it for three years and are on tour
[00:38:57] with guys from Saturday Night Live, you know, and I get a little
[00:39:04] discouraged, but then I go back, you know, I think it is? Yeah, why do you think? That's a good question. I think, and I've experienced this in leadership, no matter what anybody says about girls are the same as boys and blah, blah, blah, I think that women listen to men better and I think women and men listen to men better.
[00:40:22] And I also think that in a space that men see women,
[00:40:28] they don't want to laugh at women. And I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing. I think that's a good thing.
[00:41:40] I think that's a good thing.
[00:41:41] I think that's a good thing.
[00:41:42] I think that's a good thing.
[00:41:43] I think that's a good thing.
[00:41:44] I think that's a good thing.
[00:41:45] I think that's a good thing.
[00:41:46] I think that's a good thing.
[00:41:47] I think that's a good thing.
[00:41:48] I think that's them say no.
[00:43:01] You got to get used to guys being like, uh, go to an open mic, write a little bit of material, but also you're going to have to be more aggressive. Yeah. Than you probably naturally are. You're going to have to take more chances than the guy next to you.
[00:44:22] You know, do you think it helps still get there?
[00:44:26] I wonder if it helps. That's awesome. Do you, I guess, I think we've gone like naturally through like a whole thing. We've done like a good solid hour and a half here. It's nice, right? I mean, so I think there was some nuggets even in here that you might like. I'm gonna have to listen to this back. Yeah, I'm gonna share everything with you. Don't you worry, you can pull whatever you want from it
[00:45:44] and use it. You might have some really nice crowd nuggets there.
[00:46:43] of our just support, just come out and support us. Cause you can, you can like my flyers as much as you want.
[00:46:47] You can share them, but come out to the show.
[00:46:50] That's, that's really how you support.
[00:46:52] Yeah.
[00:46:53] And don't get a tattoo from Amy.
[00:46:55] Oh, thank you.
[00:46:56] I was just going to say, I might after this next,
[00:47:00] cause today I have somebody I'm putting out for the podcast.
[00:47:03] And then I think she has a two parter that we're doing,
[00:47:05] but I might, I will you will have that many new followers. Thank you. Thank you very much. Yeah, hopefully, hopefully, um, I keep carrying hints, but supposedly get my black belt in January. So that's what that is. Yeah, I hope they don't whip you too bad. I never looked forward to that. And that's
[00:49:41] another thing. Go to ground control. Oh, he's on the mat, get on the stage, do the thing that you've been terrified to do because quite frankly that's that's what it takes man and who better to deliver that message to us than Byron. Byron thank you so much. Congrats on your black belt.
[00:51:02] Very very hopeful about everything ahead for you. I really hope you have a great
